REAGAN

Reagan caught sight of a smirking Ginny as she rounded the corner. “Sorry,” she mouthed to her hostess.

The front door flew open. “Dennis.” Reagan tried to cross the living room to him, but Corbin stepped in the way, blocking her.

Reagan grabbed Corbin’s arm and tried to move him out of the way. It was such a relief to finally touch him, even if he was in her way. Forget about claiming him to the state, her wolf wanted to howl it to the world. Now they had to finish things up—she wanted his teeth sunk deep into her neck, and she wanted it now. Neither Ross nor any amount his asshole enforcers was going to keep her from, as Trolly said, riding Corbin later. “Dennis,” she repeated herself and gave Corbin another little shove out of her way. He didn’t budge, but he did let her step closer to Tim’s brother. “Thank you for letting us—”

Dennis put up his hand. “Anytime, but next time make sure you leave the trash in Pennsylvania. We only caught one of them. The other two fled over the creek into bear territory.” Dennis stood as tall as she remembered, but more gray peppered his dark hair. “I told that SOB Allen that if he ever stepped on my land again, I would gut him and ship him back to PA in a box.” Dennis turned and took a robe from Ginny.

“Uncle Dennis, I’ve got pancakes if you want some?” Trolly poked her head out from the swinging kitchen door.

“Thanks. I’ll be there in a minute. Do you have enough for some of the guys?” Dennis cleared his throat and winked at Ginny. She sighed.

“Uh. I’ll make more.” Trolly vanished.

Dennis put the robe on and pointed at Reagan and Corbin. “I want to talk to both of you in my study.” He marched past the staircase to the door. Reagan had never been in the room. The last time she was there, she’d been younger than Trolly, which wasn’t saying much. A stone fireplace opposed an oak desk, thick curtains hung over the window, and on a bookcase next to the fireplace, a trio of taxidermied birds kept watch over the room. “Have a seat.” He motioned to the leather sofa in front of the desk, which he plopped down at.

Reagan sat next to Corbin, her bare calf touching his.

“What we talk about doesn’t leave this room.” Dennis steepled his fingers and narrowed his eyes. “I don’t know you, Corbin. But as Reagan’s mate . . .” He cocked his head. “. . . you’re not mated.”

“We haven’t mated yet. It’s kind of new, and with Allen sending his enforcers after us, we . . . I—” Reagan whipped her head between the males in the room. Corbin wasn’t saying much. His lips might as well have been super-glued shut.

Dennis leaned back in his chair. The thing groaned with a sharp squeal. “Where are you from, son?”

Corbin’s long lashes blinked to the floor and to Dennis.
